Keeping your vehicle in tip-top shape involves more than engine maintenance and oil changes. It requires attention to the exterior, as well. This beginner’s guide to cleaning your running boards will provide easy-to-follow steps to help you keep them in great condition.

Why Clean Them When They’ll Just Get Dirty Again?

It’s true—your running boards will inevitably get dirty after cleaning them. However, regular cleaning can extend their lifespan and keep them looking as good as new. Dirt and grime can cause corrosion over time on the running boards and the place where they meet your vehicle. By maintaining a clean surface, you prevent damage and preserve the aesthetic appeal of your vehicle.

What Not To Do

Accumulated, crusty grime may tempt you to use drastic measures to clean your running boards. Don’t do it! Harsh cleaners can damage the surface and reduce your running board’s lifespan as well as damage their functionality by making them slippery or eroding the surface.

Avoid using harsh abrasives or cleaners meant for other parts of the vehicle on your truck steps . They can scratch or damage the finish on your running boards, leading to premature wear and tear. Similarly, wire scrubbers can be too abrasive and create scratches. Waxes or polishes may seem like a good idea to add shine, but they can make your running boards slippery, which defeats the purpose of using running boards.

A Spray Hose, a Bucket of Warm Water, Gentle Soap, & a Soft Brush

Now that we’ve covered what not to do, let’s discuss the proper way to clean your running boards. You’ll need a spray hose, a bucket of warm water, gentle car shampoo, and a very soft brush. Start by rinsing off loose dirt with the hose. Then, fill your bucket with warm water and a few drops of soap. Dip your brush into the soapy water and scrub the running boards gently to remove dirt and grime.

Rinse & Dry Thoroughly

After you’ve scrubbed your running boards clean, rinse and dry them thoroughly. This prevents water spots and streaks from forming. Use a soft, clean microfiber towel to soak up water. Make sure to get into all the nooks and crannies!

If your running boards have a very rough surface for traction, a towel might snag. In that case, you may need to pat them dry or point a fan at them.

Cleaning your running boards is a simple but important task that can maintain your vehicle’s appearance and functionality. Keeping your running boards clean is a simple task that keep them in great condition.
